Introduction

one&zero were fortunate enough to have DarkVision present their latest ultra high-resolution acoustic evaluation equipment to our wider team. These ultra high-resolution tools provide clarity to various issues that may be encountered in the well, utilizing the latest advancements in ultrasonic measurement technology and software.

What is the HADES™ Platform of Downhole Measurement Tools?

In the same way that the introduction of CT or MRI scanning enabled advancements in medical science, DarkVision’s high resolution acoustic imaging technology opens a new world with detailed information about downhole conditions.

The HADES™ platform combines DarkVision’s unique high-resolution acoustic imaging technology with advanced robotics to deliver unparalleled downhole imaging capabilities. Designed and built in-house to capture the highest quality volumetric data in the world, DarkVision’s arrays are optimized in various geometries to unlock proprietary full-waveform-based imaging modes and techniques.

Oil and gas production, gas storage, and CCUS wells can be comprehensively inspected from wellhead to toe, in 0.25mm detail, on both the front and backside of the casing. Images that were once only possible in a lab under carefully controlled conditions can now be obtained 30,000 feet under the ground, through oil, brine, drilling mud and production fluids.

In contrast to legacy methods that can yield inconsistent, low resolution, and unreliable data which can lead to costly assumptions, HADES captures direct, submillimetric measurements that are represented as intuitive 3D visualizations to assist operators in understanding the physical root cause behind issues. Small defects are identified early, measured and mitigated before they become costly and dangerous problems that affect future or ongoing operations.

Applications and Examples

Some examples of the application of the tool suite

HADES is used in a variety of applications, including:

Well integrity – Determine the condition of the wellhead as well as the tubing and casing, including seeing corrosion, breaches, and wellhead erosion. In addition to the inner diameter, the tool can “see through the steel” to identify deformations on the backside or OD of the casing.

Completions Optimization – The tool helps operators understand their completions performance by scanning perforations to volumetrically determine proppant erosion and outflow using an entry and exit hole analysis. Lastly, the tool is also able to identify where plugs have failed, helping to inform the root cause behind such failures and improve completions designs.

Obstructions – HADES can identify the geometry of blockages, as well as parted casing and milling damage. The following video showcases DarkVision’s 3D viewer which enables operators to control, manipulate, and measure the 3D models of specific areas of interest in their wells:
